William George Wehner, 93, passed away on July 23, 2017, at The Buckingham Apartments in Houston, Texas. He was born on June 24, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John Mark and Juanita Pennock Wehner.
Bill grew up in Philadelphia and Haverford, PA, and graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA, in 1942. After high school, he attended college at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where he was president of the Kappa Alpha Society, manager of the varsity basketball team, and received both Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering.
Bill worked as a refinery engineer and logistics expert at The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and its Asian & African affiliate, Esso Eastern, for over 40 years, including postings in Kenya, The Philippines, and Thailand.
He married Carolyn Fields in 1948 in Ardmore, PA. They were happily married for 69 years and were residents of Houston since 1973.
Bill was a member of the Manila Polo Club and the Memorial Forest Tennis Club. In addition to playing and watching tennis, he enjoyed following the Houston Astros and Rockets, as well as playing croquet, bridge, mahjong and pocket billiards. In retirement, he devoted much of his time as a volunteer tax preparer and as a board member of Sheltering Arms Senior Services.
Bill is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of Houston, his three sons, three grandchildren, two nieces, a nephew, and their families.
A memorial service will be held at The Buckingham, 8580 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX, on Saturday, August 5th, at 3:00pm. There will be a reception to greet friends and relatives following the service.
The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the excellent care Bill received from Dr. Lawrence Rice and the other doctors & nurses of Houston Methodist Hospital, as well as from Kindred at Home, Trumen Associates, and the staff at The Buckingham.
